Chiara Consonni took third place on the podium at Gent-Wevelgem.

Chiara Consonni took third place on the podium at Gent-Wevelgem. An important result in a classic race that came after 171.2km, from Ieper to Wevelgem, very hard, with a lot of wind and at the end of an excellent team effort. A well-deserved result that allows us to look forward to the next classics with confidence.

The team started out very determined and with the aim of achieving an important result. Silvia Persico got into an important breakaway attempt with other big favourites of the day. A group of seven athletes then closed in on the main group and then Karlijn Swinkels, Eugenia Bujak and Chiara Consonni came back to the front. Eleonora Gasparrini was put out of the race by a fall.

Also very unlucky in the finale was Silvia Persico, who had to stop and change bikes due to a mechanical problem. But the girls remained compact and worked very well. In the sprint won by Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx), second place for Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo) and then third place for Chiara Consonni.

After the race Chiara Consonni said: “I am very happy with this result. Gent-Wevelgem is a race I like a lot, every year I come here to do well and this year I got a good third place. The podium was my goal and we achieved it. I am happy for my team, my teammates did a great job and I have to thank them. Unfortunately, Silvia Persico had a problem in the final kilometres, but Karlijn Swinkels and Eugenia Bujak did a great job for me”.
