Lara Gillespie wins after a solo breakaway and is the leader of Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa. Venturelli 2nd

April 20, 2024

Lara Gillespie claimed her first success of 2024 thanks to the second stage (Montefalcione - Torre del Greco) of the Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa after a 70-kilometer breakaway. The Irish national champion arrived with a 3'18'' lead over second-place finisher and teammate Federica Venturelli.

This is a very important day for UAE Development Team, because this result shows the quality of the work of sports directors Davide Gani, Giuseppe Lanzoni and Aida Nuño Palacio.

Thanks to these results, Lara and Federica are currently in the top two positions in the overall classification of the Giro Mediterraneo in Rosa. Federica Venturelli is also the best young rider and Lara Gillespie is leading the points classification.

"I have to thank my team, I'm grateful to be surrounded by such special people," said Lara Gillespie, "after the second GPM I attacked and made the gap. It was a long way to go, but I pushed, putting all the energy I had in my body. I didn't think I would make the gap like this, I am very satisfied. Now, with the whole team we will defend the lead with all our strength until the last."

These are the words of Federica Venturelli, second.

"Today's race also went very well. In the first part of the race we managed as a team to always stay close and compact. With about 70 km to go Lara went into a breakaway. My teammates and I controlled the situation until the climb at the halfway point. There we remained in twelve, with me there was Federica Piergiovanni. Unfortunately, Federica had a mechanical problem and was forced to change bikes. At 6 km, on the last climb I attacked and I was able to arrive alone, in second position. I am happy that I was able to complete this attack as it was planned.
Tomorrow I am ready and happy to wear the white jersey of leader of the youth classification."
