Ebras and Harvey shine in the inaugural Stage of the Vuelta Extremadura Féminas

March 8, 2024

In the inaugural stage of the Vuelta Extremadura, which took place from Nuñomoral to Coria on a hilly route covering 91.7 kilometers, Elisabeth Ebras and Mikayla Harvey of the UAE Development Team made their mark with convincing performances.

The day was characterized by strong winds in the final 20 kilometers, making the race even more challenging and testing the participants' endurance and skill. Despite the adverse conditions, the athletes from the UAE Development Team demonstrated their determination and ability, securing the fourth top 10 finish in five races.

As mentioned, the group fragmented in the final 20 kilometers due to the wind. However, thanks to their determination and the well-studied tactics of the team, the UAE Development Team riders managed to remain competitive and regroup for the final sprint.

Ebras secured a notable sixth place, once again showcasing her talent after her recent second place at the Porec Trophy Ladies.

Harvey of the UAE Team ADQ achieved a solid eighth place, adding further satisfaction to the UAE Development Team with her performance.

Here are the words of the protagonists:

Elisabeth Ebras:
"The race was quite hectic towards the end because we faced about 20 kilometers of crosswinds. Then, within the last four and a half kilometers, we encountered two decisive moments. I'd say we gave it our all in the end. Maybe if we had been a bit more towards the front, it could have been better, because dealing with tailwinds isn't easy. Overall, I think the girls did a good job. We were all at the front towards the end, which was important."

Mikayla Harvey:
"Today was a really nice day. A lot happened, and we encountered a few obstacles, but as a team, we managed to stay together and overcome everything. I was super proud of all the girls I was racing with. Leading into the final stretch, there was quite a bit of chaos. We encountered a crosswind section earlier, so the pace was pretty fast. Then, as we approached the final stretch, we encountered a few roundabouts. Despite the chaos, we tried to stick together as a team. However, we did lose a bit of cohesion. But as we approached the last climb, we managed to regroup and push ourselves. Although we aimed for the podium, we came close, so we'll stay motivated and try even harder tomorrow."

Team Director Aida Nuno Palacio:
"It was a difficult day, but I'm very happy with the race and the performance of the team. Piergiovanni had two big crashes, so it was tough for us, but she managed to rejoin the bunch both times and didn't lose time at the finish line, so it's okay. Bryson-Boe had a flat tire, so we had some work during the race, but overall, they did a very good job protecting our leaders. I think it was also important to have Mickey because she remained calm throughout, which was crucial for the rest of the team. Additionally, she helped Elisabeth to perform well in the final."
