Olivia Baril celebrated her first victory of the season by taking the Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar in Spain one year later. After 112.3 kilometres of racing, the Canadian rider of UAE Team ADQ, who has lived in the Basque Country for a few years now, once again excelled on her home roads and after the final podium at the Itzulia Women a few weeks ago, she repeated herself today with a beautiful victory on the finish line of Eibar where she had already won a year ago.
At the sprint, Baril beat the Spanish Sheila Gutiérrez (Movistar Team) and the Ukrainian Yuliia Biriukova, an athlete of the UAE Development Team who was Baril's teammate on this occasion.
This victory demonstrates the beauty of the project that unites the World Tour UAE Team ADQ and the UAE Development Team. Thanks to the perfect connection between these two teams, the UAE Team ADQ athletes can regain confidence by winning and, at the same time, can teach the younger riders a lot. Wonderful work by the young UAE Development Team athletes who propelled the great final result.
The decisive moment of the race was the San Miguel climb. Biriukova and Baril remained in the group of the best eight athletes. On the descent Debora Silvestri attacked, but Yuliia Biriukova worked hard to close the gap and help Olivia Baril in the sprint. In fact, with a few kilometres to go Debora Silvestri was caught, Olivia Baril won the sprint and the UAE Development Team won the team classification.
Olivia Baril said: "I am very happy with how the race went. It was a race interpreted very aggressively by the Movistar Team. I have to thank so much my teammates from the UAE Development Team who did a great job to get into the breakaways and close in on other attempts and help me in the final to take the best position. We stayed in a small group at the end, Biriukova was with me and she did a great job working for me in the finale so I was able to win the sprint and the race”.
UAE Team ADQ also concluded their German experience at the LOTTO Thüringen Ladies Tour today. In the 125.2km sixth and final stage to Mühlhausen, Marta Bastianelli finished eighth despite a technical problem in the sprint.
